United Empire Loyalists were Americans who remained loyal to King George III and the British Empire. They moved to Canada after the American Revolution.
Hebron, Connecticut was incorporated in 1708 in Hartford County. It became part of Windham County in 1726 and part of Tolland County in 1785.
Daniel Shipman was born on April 13, 1733 in East Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut.
Daniel married Keziah Horton. Keziah was born about 1739 in Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut and was the daughter of Ebenezer Horton.

In 1778 they were living in Albany County, New York and Daniel's name was on a list of Tories.
In 1786 Daniel filed a claim for damages which was rejected. His claim said that while
attempting to go into General Burgoyne's camp in August 1777, [he] was taken prisioner and carried to General Gates, from there to Albany. Lay prisioner abord the Guard ship fourteen days from thence to Toppice where I lay six days before that place burnt, then carried to a meeting house on the way to Hartford but obtained a parole to go to my family. After arriving was taken by thirty men in the Mob and Abused, Strypt me and whipt me Severly.
The spring after was taken to be guarded to Albany but got released. After this came four men with their arms and a rope intending to kill me or hang me but I concealed myself under the floor. I then fled my house and quit my land and escaped to the State of Vermont.
In 1784 they moved to Leeds County, Ontario.

Keziah died on March 21, 1807 and Daniel died on April 27, 1809 in Augusta Township, Leed County, Ontario, Canada.
During the American Revolution a Tory or Loyalist was used in for those who remained loyal to the British Crown.
The first European settlements in Ontario were after the American Revolution when 5,000 loyalists left the new United States.
Samuel Shipman was born on January 17, 1764 in East Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. His parents were Daniel Shipman and Keziah Horton.
He married Catherine Elliot. Catherine was born on February 2, 1768. She was the daughter of John Elliott.

His second wife was Margaret Henderson. Margaret was born about 1774 in Yonge Township.
Both David and Elizabeth received the grants of 200 acres that were available to children of United English Loyalists. During the War of 1812, David transported ammunition for the Canadian forces.

According to Howard Brown, Samuel lived in Yonge, Leeds County, Ontario for over 30 years (Concession 1, Lot 3, East half between Yonge Mills and Lyn), his patent under Order of Council dated July 2, 1829. He was first granted 200 acres in Elizabethtown (Concession 9, Lot 23 patent dated April 19, 1798.
An article in the Brockville Recorder Oct. 18, 1985 states that Samuel migrated to Canada in 1784.
He took out papers on 200 acres on Lot 28 of the Eighth Concession of Elizabethtown on April 19, 1798. He was also among the early landholders in Yonge township. On April 19, 1798 he was granted 100 acres on the west half of Lot 3 of the Second Concession of Yonge.
According to That Leavitt (History of Leeds and Grenville), he had 12 children by his first wife Catherine Elliott and one child by Margaret Henderson. Howard Brown tentatively lists 7 sons for Samuel but is uncertain on Stephen ("perhaps") and Joel ("probably"). Since Ezekiel also had sons Ezekiel, John and Ebenezer, it is possible these are the same people placed in both families. These three sons are named in the 1803-7 census in Ezekiel's household, although John does not appear in 1803 or 1807. We do not know the names of any of Samuel's six daughters by Catherine Elliott.
After writing this, Alice Shipman Stevenson received a "Family Register" which was found at John's Antique and Flea Market on the Yonge Mills Road. It names all the children of Samuel with dates of brith: John, Joel, Daniel, Samuel, Cynthia, Ezekiel, Neviah (?), Sarah Sophia, Stephen, Catherine Elliott and Semantha by Catherine Elliott. With Margaret Henderson he had Anna.
He married, first, Catherine Elliott, circa 1786. Born 2 Feb 1768. Died, 18 Jun 1811. Burial in Lyn Cem. Yonge Twp, Leeds Co. Ont.
